Gay Men, Straight Women Have Similar Brains

Washington Post Article: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/06/16/AR2008061601038.html

"MRI and PET scan studies are showing remarkable similarities between the brains of gay men and straight women, and between those of lesbians and straight men."

Very interesting read. Thoughts?

While I think the "nature vs. nurture" question has been over for quite some time, count me as one of those people who quietly hopes that there is no "gay gene". I can only imagine all of the screening stupid, unfit parents would do to ensure that theirs is not some same-gender-loving other-baby.

Also, while genes clearly play a role in how the brains of men and women develop differently, homosexual males are not XX and homosexual females are not XY. Does this evidence -- that shows a difference in the physical layout of their brains -- suggest that many of the differences between male and female brains -- and therefore, to an extent, cognition -- are hormonal? If the implication of these findings is that it is not the X or the Y which necessarily determine the structure of certain parts of the brain, I don't see why not. Of course, genes also control which hormones exist and in what quantities, but this could be evidence that one's gender identity is not linked entirely to whether they have a penis or a vagina. This would seem to lend some empirical validity to the perspective of transgendered people that their brains do not match their bodies. That could, quite literally, be the case.

Yes, I realize that I've heaped some assumptions onto the researchers' findings, but these things are worth pondering.
